ADVANCED CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT

 

The American Heart Association’s Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course based on the assessment and management of the cardiac arrest adult patient.  This course is for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the management of cardiac arrest and other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes, but is not limited to, physicians, nurses, paramedics and respiratory therapists.

Description:

This classroom-based course reflects the new science from the 2010 American Heart Association Guideline for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care focuses on the assessment and management of the acute MI, CVA, and cardiac arrest adult patient. In a learner friendly, hands-on environment, participants will complete a series of lectures and learning stations including:

  • Ability to recognize and initiate the management of basic arrhythmia recognition and therapeutic management.
  • Recognize and initiate early management of peri-arrest conditions that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in providing Basic Life Support care, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating AED use.
  • Manage cardiac arrest until return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), termination of resuscitation, or transfer of care.
  • Identify and treat ischemic chest pain and expedite the care of patients with acute coronary syndromes.
  • Recognize other life-threatening clinical situations, such as stroke, and provide effective initial care and transfer to reduce disability and death.
  • Demonstrate effective communication as a member or leader of a resuscitation team and recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance.
  • Recognize:
    • Stable and Unstable Tachycardia
    • Atrial Flutter
    • Atrial Fibrillation
    • AV Blocks
    • Sinus Bradycardia.
    • Ventricular Fibrillation
    • PEA
    • Asystole

Pre-Course Materials:

Only participants that have completed the pre-course materials will be allowed to participate in the course. Refunds will not be issued for those that do not complete their pre-course materials.

Course Materials:

The ACLS Provider Manual is included in the cost of the initial course and will be mailed directly to the participant if registering two weeks prior to the course.   A self-assessment test will be sent by email to every student upon successful registration.  If registering within two weeks of the course date, please know you will need to pick up your manual at 120 McKinley St. during normal business hours.

All students must bring proof of current AHA BLS CPR card on the day of class.  If you are recertifying ACLS, you must bring your current ACLS card.  Upon successful completion, participants will receive a ACLS Course Completion Card from the American Heart Association valid for two years.

Written / Skills Exam

You must show proficiency of all necessary skills and receive 84% on final written exam for completion of course.

IMPORTANT COURSE INFORMATION

Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothes. Please advise our educational staff prior to class of any physical limitations so that reasonable accommodations can be made.

Upon successful completion, all participants receive a Heartsaver Provider Course Completion Card from the AHA that is valid for two years.

INITIAL COURSE INFORMATION

The textbook is included in the cost of the course and will be mailed directly to the participant if registering two weeks prior to the course start date unless otherwise requested. If registering within two weeks of the course date, please know you will need to pick up your manual at 120 McKinley St. during normal business hours.

Students must register five business days in advance. All students are responsible for self assessment, studying materials prior to class. Students that are more than 15 minutes late to class will be asked to reschedule. Registration closes when roster is full or five days prior to class, whichever comes first.

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association. Any fees charged for such a course, except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course materials do not represent income to the Association.

RENEWEL INFORMATION:

The recommended renewal interval for all AHA courses is 2 years. A textbook is NOT included in cost of course. Providers who intend to take a renewal course must show a Provider card as entrance into a renewal course.
