PEDIATRIC ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT

 

The American Heart Association’s  Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course based on the assessment and management of the acutely ill pediatric patient.  The PALS course is for healthcare providers who either directly or indirectly participate in the management of emergencies involving infants and children.  This includes, but is not limited to, physicians, nurses, paramedics and respiratory therapists.

Objectives:

This classroom-based course reflects the new science from the 2010 American Heart Association Guideline for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care.  The material focuses on the assessment and management of the acutely ill pediatric patient. In a learner friendly, hands-on environment, participants will complete a series of lectures and learning stations covering;

  • Functioning as a team leader and team member in an evaluation code scenario that includes patient assessment, arrhythmia recognition and treatment, supervision of team members, and problem solving.
  • Electrical therapy as well as the resuscitation team concept and the systematic approach to pediatric assessments.
  • Infant and child CPR
  • Respiratory & Airway Management
  • Intraosseous insertion
  • Circulatory management
  • Basic Arrhythmia recognition and therapeutic treatment of:
    • Sinus Bradycardia
    • AV Blocks
    • SVT
    • VT
    • VF
    • PEA
    • Asystole
  • Megacode & Team Dynamics

Pre-Course Material:

Once registered for the course a self-assessment test will be sent to you for completion prior to class.

Course Material:

The PALS Provider Manual is included in the cost of the initial course and will be mailed directly to the participant if registering two weeks prior to the course start date. If registering less then two weeks before the course date, please know you will need to pick up your manual at 120 McKinley St. during normal business hours.

All students must bring proof of current AHA BLS CPR card on the day of class.  If you are recertifying PALS, you must bring your current PALS card.  Upon successful completion, participants will receive a PALS Course Completion Card from the American Heart Association valid for two years.

Written / Skills Exam

You must show proficiency of all necessary skills and receive 84% on final written exam for completion of course.

IMPORTANT COURSE INFORMATION

Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothes. Please advise our educational staff prior to class of any physical limitations so that reasonable accommodations can be made.

Upon successful completion, all participants receive a PALS Provider Course Completion Card from the AHA that is valid for two years.

INITIAL COURSE INFORMATION

The textbook is included in the cost of the course and will be mailed directly to the participant if registering two weeks prior to the course start date unless otherwise requested. If registering within two weeks of the course date, please know you will need to pick up your manual at 120 McKinley St. during normal business hours.

Students must register five business days in advance.  All students are responsible for self assessment, studying materials prior to class.  Students that are more than 15 minutes late to class will be asked to reschedule.  Registration closes when roster is full or five days prior to class, whichever comes first.

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association. Any fees charged for such a course, except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course materials do not represent income to the Association.

RENEWEL INFORMATION:

The recommended renewal interval for all AHA courses is 2 years.  A textbook is NOT included in cost of course.  Providers who intend to take a renewal course must show a Provider card as entrance into a renewal course.
