FAQs:
**”If we don't get the pediatric pads can we still use the AED on small children?” Yes, American Heart Association and Red Cross guidelines allow for use of the adult AED pads on smaller children by placing one pad on the front of the chest and one pad on the back.
“Is training available?” Yes, we can provide a brief in-service training for local organizations or groups. This training takes about 1-2 hours and includes a review of when & how to perform hands-only CPR, how to use the AED, how to administer naloxone, and, if ordered, using the Stop The Bleed or rescue breathing supplies.
“Can someone use an AED even if they did not get the training?” Yes! An AED can be intimidating but is a relatively simple device to use. The first step in using any AED is to turn it on then follow the audible and visual directions to apply and operate it.
“Are wall boxes available to store the AED?” Yes, although not part of this program, there are:
Wall signs to make the AED location visible.
“Is a refurbished AED reliable?” Yes, the biomedical equipment company fully refurbishes and tests each unit and provides a 1-year warranty. This is one of the most reliable and durable AEDs. At BRS, we have several units which are 15 years old and still functioning. What are the costs to maintain the AED? The costs are low but still may be impactful for small budgets. Every 2-3 years the batteries require replacement ($60-90), adult pads expire every 5 years ($160-190), and (if purchased) pediatric pads expire every 2 years ($110-130).
"Is there liability in having an AED?" No, Vermont Statutes -- 18 V.S.A. § 907. Automated external defibrillators provides protections for organizations, business owners, and other locations that own or provide access to an AED under the Good Samaritan Laws. The only thing the location needs to do is maintain the AED, register it (we can help), and replace batteries and pads when they are due. "EMS is usually fast, why do we need an AED?" There are 3 things that save lives and often need to be done before EMS arrival...
🩸 Stop serious bleeding,
🫁 Give naloxone for opioid overdose with slow/no breathing
🫀⚡ Start hands only CPR & apply an AED when someone is unconscious without an obvious pulse
Brain death or bodily death may occur within 4-6 minutes due to lack of oxygen carried by blood in any of the 3 situations above. This is less time than an average ambulance response anywhere in the US. We rely on community assistance to help save more lives!
